Interactive visualisation of electric motor designs

Supervisors: Kevin Bersch, Colin Gravill
Location: Cambridge, UK. Possibility to work from home 2 days/week.
Duration: Up to 3 months. Fixed term contract with flexible starting date.
Reward: Monthly salary of £2000 for undergraduate students, £3000 for graduate students. Holiday allowance in line with the rest of the team.

Project description

We develop electric motors by simulating physical properties (e.g. electromagnetic, mechanical, thermal) of many different design variations. Monumo has developed simulation tools for motors and uses them for large-scale optimisation and training of machine learning models.
The aim of this project is to create a web-based tool for the simulations, helping our motor engineers and machine learning researchers to propose designs, explore their performance and compare trade-offs interactively. You will be responsible for visualising model input parameters and results and identifying performance metrics together with our team.

Qualification and preferred skills

This position is primarily targeted at final year undergraduate and graduate students in Engineering, Machine Learning and AI, Computer Science, Physics, Maths, or a related field. Applications with other levels of qualifications will nonetheless be considered.

The skillsets that we see as relevant for the placement are:
• Experience with data analysis in Python (e.g. numpy, pandas).
• Experience with data visualisation (e.g. matplotlib, plotly, streamlit, shiny, D3). We have not fixed a toolkit for this project, but we expect something like these would be effective.
• Familiar with standard software development tools (e.g. git) and best practices.
• Good communication skills: you will collect requirements from an interdisciplinary team and iterate on features based on their feedback.
• Some experience with engineering simulations would be beneficial, but not required.
