Motor Drive Test Engineer

Salary £40-£60k

The Role

You will be responsible for the development and testing of motor drive systems, including inverter interfacing in low, medium and high power and high voltage applications, validating motor control, and measuring motor and system performance. You will be required to collaborate with the development team to create electronics test rig environment, instrument state-of-the-art powertrains with sensor and monitoring infrastructure that will allow the team to prove novel designs.

Test rig build including wiring and instrumentations for power measurement, torque, encoder, temperature sensors. This will include the development and maintenance of data acquisition systems, including hardware/software and the test-cell computer network. Equipment build, commissioning and debugging of in-house PCB designs.

You will be required to:

  • Write clear and concise test instructions, generate high-quality test reports, provide support to engineers with trouble-shooting of the motor drive and control system
  • Be responsible for the maintenance, calibration, and safety operations of the test facilities
  • Be comfortable working in an agile environment with ambitious ideas and goals. Be adaptable and willing to apply your skills to other areas of work as may be required of you on occasions.

About you:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical / Electronics
  • Demonstrable experience of equivalent-level working in test and verification environments.
  • Previous experience of data acquisition systems, ideally using dynamometer test beds and test rigs
  • Knowledge of I/O network protocols as CANbus, MODBus etc
  • Experience in power electronics, motor control, analogue, digital and sensing technologies.
  • Some experience in fault finding electro-mechanical systems, repairing them and suggesting improvements
  • Comfortable in a laboratory environment with experience using power sources, oscilloscopes, soldering equipment and taking precise measurements
  • Strong communication and team working skills
  • Be flexible and open-minded to respond quickly to changes in project priorities
  • Be able to clearly report progress and results, in-person as well as with producing a high standard of written documentation
  • Be a creative thinker and problem solver; highly self-motivated and self-reliant with enthusiasm for motors drive system
  • Excellent communication in English (both verbal & written).

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with Matlab, Labview, test automation
  • Experience with motor drive test system
  • An appreciation of motor control techniques for low and high speed, single-phase and multi-phase motors
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout and associated software.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Embedded C/C++ software development
  • Experience with source version control (e.g. git)
  • Collaborate and liaise with experts in multiple domains…
